A Catastrophic Chapter in Bahamian History

Hurricane Dorian, a devastating and historically intense tropical cyclone, became the most powerful storm ever recorded to strike The Bahamas. With sustained winds reaching a staggering 185 mph (295 km/h), Dorian earned its place as the first Category 5 hurricane of the 2019 Atlantic season—and the worst natural disaster in Bahamian history.

On September 1, Dorian made landfall on Elbow Cay in the Abaco Islands at peak intensity before moving slowly toward Grand Bahama. There, it stalled for over 24 hours, unleashing relentless high winds, torrential rain, and massive storm surge. The destruction was catastrophic: entire neighborhoods were leveled or swept away, leaving over 70,000 people homeless.

Originating from a tropical wave, Dorian traveled through the Lesser Antilles before strengthening into a hurricane just north of the Greater Antilles on August 28.  Rapid intensification transformed it into a Category 5 system as it approached The Bahamas, where it made two landfalls—first in Abaco, then on Grand Bahama.  The prolonged path of destructive assault on the islands resulted in widespread devastation, obliterating thousands of homes.   The true death toll remains uncertain, with hundreds still listed as missing.

The scale of damage makes Dorian the costliest natural disaster in Bahamian history; and in recognition of the storm's catastrophic impact and immense loss of life, the World Meteorological Organization retired the name "Dorian" from its list of rotating Atlantic hurricane names.
